How Much Stuff?

When trying to estimate your space needs, remember that one cubic yard equals the size of a standard washing machine. You can scale your mental image from there. Four cubic yards is perfect for a single-room cleanout or minor project (about two pickup trucks). Eight cubic yards handles a medium room remodel or a full 5x5 storage unit. Twelve cubic yards accommodates larger kitchen remodels or a small apartment move, while 16 cubic yards represents major home cleanouts, roof replacements, or filling the majority of a standard 15-foot moving truck. Ensure you always account for "air gaps" between bulky items, as items like intact furniture take up more cubic yardage than flat-packed or demolished materials.

How to visualize the volume of these specific room examples:

8 Cubic Yards (The Standard Bedroom or Living Room):

Imagine taking everything out of a normal guest bedroom—a queen bed frame and mattress, a dresser, two nightstands, a chair, and a few boxes of clothes. Alternatively, picture a living room containing a three-seater sofa, an armchair, a coffee table, an end table, and a TV stand. Broken down or packed closely together, that furniture equals roughly 8 cubic yards.

12 Cubic Yards (The Studio Apartment):

This combines your living and sleeping areas. Picture the bedroom furniture mentioned above, plus a small loveseat, a TV stand, a modest kitchen table with two chairs, and about 15–20 medium moving boxes.

16 Cubic Yards (The 1-Bedroom Apartment or Basement):

This covers a fully furnished one-bedroom apartment, including a queen bedroom set, a full living room set (sofa, chair, coffee table, entertainment center), a dining table with four chairs, and roughly 30 to 40 moving boxes. For homeowners, this is also a great mental proxy for clearing out a cluttered, standard-sized 1-car garage or a medium-sized storage basement.
